Measurement of strain as a function of applied stress is a standard test of engineering alloys, but a new technique in the study of quantum materials. Challenges in applying this technique to quantum materials include that samples are often small, and that the strain range of interest is generally around 1% or more, well above the elastic limit of typical quantum high-strength metallic alloys. In this talk, stress-strain data are presented on the unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4, and the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO2. In Sr2RuO4, uniaxial stress induces a change in the topology of the Fermi surface structure, and then magnetic order, and both features yield an anomaly in the stress-strain relationship. In PdCrO2, applied uniaxial stress drives two first-order magnetic transitions, the second of which is to a magnetic periodicity that nests the Fermi surface. The Young's modulus of PdCrO2 increases by about 50 GPa upon transition into this stress-induced phase.
